The LPC at Sheffield takes the form of a part-time course which runs on a Friday and a full-time programme where students have the choice of classes either in the morning (10am until 1pm) or the afternoon (1.30pm until 4.30pm), usually from Monday to Thursday. The ten electives on offer at Stage Two vary from the general to the commercial. The majority of teaching is delivered via workshops, each taking in around 18 students, and is supplemented by online lectures, multiple-choice questions and short-answer quizzes. Though most lectures have shifted to on-screen streaming, there are still some for students to attend.
The school has a dedicated careers adviser who offers one-on-one help with CVs and applications. Students can undergo a mock interview with a local solicitor, which is filmed and later picked apart by the student and the careers adviser. Students can add weight to their CVs through pro bono work for the Innocence Project and FreeLaw – a student project run in partnership with national law firm Irwin Mitchell where students research aspects of social welfare law for charities. Dedicated students who achieve a commendation or distinction on the LPC can top up to an MA in Legal Practice. The law school prides itself as being small and friendly, and it takes many of its students from the university’s various undergrad courses as Sheffield alumni benefit from a 10% reduction of course fees. Students say: “Sheffield is a lot less corporate [than some other law schools]. It has a bit more of a friendly feel to it and it's very social.”
